History
IFS is a global enterprise software company headquartered in Linköping, Sweden with 50 offices around the world. IFS provides a component-based extended ERP suite built on SOA technology. Its primary product is IFS Applications which it develops, supplies, and implements.
Based in Sweden, it maintains development centers in Sri Lanka, Poland and operates as a multinational corporation through subsidiaries in the Americas, Europe North, Europe West, Europe Central, and Africa Asia and Pacific. IFS has a global customer base of 2,000 customers and is present in more than 50 countries with 2,700 employees in total.
Founded in 1983, IFS pioneered component-based enterprise resources planning (ERP) software with IFS Applications, now in its seventh generation. IFS’ component architecture provides solutions that are easier to implement, run, and upgrade, and that give companies the flexibility to respond quickly to market changes, new business opportunities, and new technologies.
IFS has a solid, growing presence in the North American business software market. IFS North America serves medium-size to large companies in a variety of key industries, including aerospace and defense, industrial manufacturing, automotive, high-tech, construction, and process industries such as food and beverage.
Markets
IFS Applications is a strong solution for companies with requirements in manufacturing, supply chain, project management, and service and asset management areas, especially in industries like defense, energy, communications, construction and process manufacturing. It has increased its focus on project-based companies, but it has also released an IFS Retail version in 2009. The next core release will focus on further improvements to its project management solutions, mainly around project costing and accounting; service and asset management, including collaboration with subcontractors in all phases of an order; and a focus on better usability and user efficiency, especially in the financial processes.
IFS is best suited for core and upper- midmarket companies in complex and asset-intensive manufacturing industries, especially those where project management is at the core of the business. IFS is a global solution, but almost two-thirds of its business is located in EMEA.
IFS supports several vertical sectors including aerospace & defense, automotive, food & beverage, high-tech, industrial manufacturing, process industries, construction, contracting & service management, and utilities & telecommunication.

Technology
IFS’ ease of use and its very modular architecture are highly regarded by customers, and the solution can have a low price point with smaller customers. Its modular architecture allows customers to implement the solution in a phased approach without sacrificing the benefits of a highly integrated suite.
The UI IFS Enterprise Explorer (based on the multi-year Aurora initiative) has taken much longer to develop, but unlike UI initiatives from other vendors, all screens in the IFS application were completely transformed, which has delivered a highly usable user experience. Search and collaboration features are all directly built-in. IFS Enterprise Explorer makes use of new principles that come with Windows 7, like federated search, which allows users to access information stored in the ERP directly from any desktop, even from those that have no IFS client installed.
Marketing Channels
IFS combines a global product and organization with local support for its customers. IFS North America is headquartered in Chicago, with major offices in Milwaukee; Raleigh, North Carolina; San Jose, California; Tucson, Arizona; Toronto; and Mexico City. IFS also has a large virtual organization.
